Plot Summary of Joining
"Neville Crispin saves the life of Guy de Thorpe. To repay the act and to bond the friendship Guy and Neville enter into a marriage contract for their children. Neville promises his first born daughter,Milisent, to Guy's first born son, Wulfric. A few years later the two meet for the first time and the meeting results in Wulf being attacked by Milisent's falcon. The attack results in the death of the bird and in Milisent's ankle being broken. While it was an accident both young people carry bad feelings about the event. When Wulf finally goes to collect Milisent to join the two families thru marriage several years later, both are wanting out of the contract. Mili has become a young 18 year old woman who dresses in mens's clothing and participates in men's activites. She hunts, uses bow and arrow and has even developed a plan to keep her father's castle safe from attack. Wulf is hoping for a young refined delicate young woman.

The day he arrives to collect Mili, she is attacked. He saves her and her identical twin sister from harm. A few days later she is attached an wounded from an arrow. Wulf decided he cannot keep her safe at her father's castle and takes her and her sister to his father's castle. They will marry in one month's time. During that time Mili is attacked yet again, almost seduced by King John, and runs away to the castle of an old friend. Along with their fathers Wulf and Mili try to figure out who is trying to kill her and why King John is involved. During all of these events, Wulf is trying to make a lady out of Mili and finds himself drawn to her independence, wit, stubborness. She finally notices that he is a very well put together knight. During the story we catch a glimpse of another little girl who likes to wear boys clothes and Neville shows Mili that he too has skills that are different from most other knights and would be ridiculed if they became public knowledge. Eventually Wulf and Mili make compromises and settle into what promises to be an unconventional marriage."
