| Plot Summary of The Family Markowitz |
"Rose Markowitz is an elderly Jewish woman living in New York in the 80s when her second husband dies. From there, the book jumps ahead in time a few years to when she's living in California near her youngest son, Henry. Then the book jumps a few more years ahead, and Henry, who was in a homosexual relationship in California, is now living in England and is getting married to a British woman. Rose is lonely in California and pressures her older son, Ed, and his wife to move her to DC to be near them.
Also in this book, Ed's daughter, Miriam, gets married. She is a young medical student, and although her family is not very religious, she has become very orthodox. In addition to Miriam, Ed and Sarah have 3 other children who are college aged. Sarah is frustrated by never achieving literary fame like she had wanted, and now that her children are grown up, she fills her time by teaching classes at a community center."
