| Plot Summary of Shut Up He Explained: The Memoir of a Blacklisted Kid |
"Kate Lardner was an infant when her biological father died during World War II. The only father she knew was Ring Lardner Jr. -- her step-father as well as her uncle. She describes her life and augments it with letters between her parents and her parents' friends during the McCarthy era.
Lardner was a screenwriter who refused to name names before the HUAC. His emprisonment and blacklisting and its affect on his step-daughter as well as his family and professional relationships is described.
The book ends as Kate Lardner reaches maturity and concludes with Ring Jr.'s death."
