Plot Summary of Plain and Simple: A Woman's Journey to the Amish
"Sue Bender, an artist from Berkeley, California, is at a spiritual crossroads in her life when she begins to connect with the arts of the Amish. What begins as an appreciation of a quilt and some dolls she admires becomes a quest to learn more about this religious group and their needlecrafts, but it is also a journey of self-discovery.

Bender secures an introduction to a family with whom she lives and from whom she begins to learn about how the Amish practice voluntary simplicity. These lessons she lives while with this family, she fully intends to incorporate into her life. Upon her return home, busyness and the demands of modern society seem to be too imposing to adopt simplicity.

She soon finds herself wanting to live with yet another Amish family. Bender secures an introduction to yet another family in another part of the midwest and lives with them for an extended time. Although these two families live different lives within the same religion, Bender returns to her own life renewed and intent on incorporating the lessons from these individuals into her daily living."
