Plot Summary of Budding Prospects
"Felix Nasmith, looking for a deal to make money, and his friends Phil and Gesh are sharecroppers in a huge marijuana farm. They are promised half a million dollars as their share of a total of a million and a half the crop will sell for. Vogelsang, who owns the land and fronts the money, gets half a million, and Boyd Dowst provides the agricultural expertise for half a million.
The promised "hunting cabin" turns out to be a shack. The generator that is to supply electricity is too noisy to use, the land is rocky and sloping. Yet, with more than $160,000 apiece in the offing, the trio of city-bred peons begins to learn farming.
After several months of backbreaking work, their feelings about the job begin to change. It isn't about the money anymore, it's about pride in getting a tough job done. That's good, because only 1,000 of the 2,000 seeds planted grow transplantable seedlings. More than a month into the project, a bear does in a whole section of plants. Rats get more, and by the time the field is beginning to ripen only 800 plants remain. Half of these are male, and must be culled. Only female marijuana plants produce the active ingredient, THC.
Three visits to a local bar each turn into a different kind of disaster. First, the three get into a fight. The second visit yields the information that the daughter of the bartender knows what Felix and his friends are doing. The third visit ends with a drunken Felix insulting his new girl friend and vomiting on the wife of a cop who has it in for him.
A fire destroys the storage shed, and only a herculean effort by the three workers saves the crop and the bunkhouse.
Just as crop is ready to harvest, a steady rain threatens to kill it. With Phil seriously injured from the fire, they manage to salvage some of the marijuana. Felix fears he has lost his lady love."
