| Plot Summary of Little Lord Fauntleroy |
"Cedric Errol lives with his mother, whom he calls "Dearest", in America. Left to fend for themselves when Captain Cedric Errol, Cedric's dad, died, Cedric and Dearest are poor and living in a small cottage. But one day a man comes to see Cedric. He tells Cedric that Cedric is of royal blood, and that his grandfather is am Earl. Cedric then learns that he is heir to the throne and that his grandfather wants him to come and live with him!
What Cedric doesn't know is that Captain Errol and Cedric's grandfather had a falling out before Cedric was born. Captain Errol wanted to marry Dearest, but because she was American and not of royal blood, his grandfather disowned the Captain. Because of this, Cedric's grandfather does not want Dearest to come to live with him.
Nonetheless, Cedric goes to live with his grandfather, although he sees Dearest every few days because she lives on the mansion grounds. Cedric loves his grandfather, and gets along with him splendidly. He thinks highly of his grandfather, saying that he is the sweetest and most kind man Cedric has ever met. Unfortunately, Cedric is wrong; his grandfather is a mean, bitter, hard man, who hardly ever forgives anyone and who lets his tenants' cottages leak and rot. But through the love of this little boy, there's a chance that he might change. "
