| Plot Summary of The Rescue |
"Anne is a hard-working, determined young woman in Victorian England. After her mother's death and the loss of almost all her family's possessions Anne is left to be the head of the house and take care of her father who suffers from dementia. Born to be a lady, Anne bravely accepts the challenge and does her best, working as a common woman and even trying to do some house repairs. While she is up on a ladder doing that, a new neighbor shows up, a young man Robert Weston who is just moving in to the area. Robert's sudden appearance startles Anne, she loses her balance and falls off the ladder. Fortunately, Robert is quick enough to run up and catch her. Unfortunately, Anne's father looks out just in time to see his daughter in the arms of a stranger. He assumes that Anne has been secretly having an affair with the man and won't listen to any explanations. He demands that Anne and Robert get married, without delay. They agree, just to pacify the sick old man, but then the word gets out, and the matter becomes the primary subject of the town's gossip. It's too late to back out now; everyone assumes that something has been going on between Robert and Anne, and if they suddenly break up both of their reputations will be tarnished even more. They proceed with the marriage. Anne and Robert eventually fall in love.
