Plot Summary of Bud, Not Buddy
"The year is 1936, and in the turbulent time of the Great Depression, Bud only knows two things for sure: he's going to find his father no matter what it takes, and he despises being called Buddy. Bud's mother has died, leaving him all alone in the world and stuck with an abusive foster family. With only a suitcase full of special things and his rules for becoming a better liar, Bud sets out to find the father he never knew... the only problem is, just who is Bud's father? He's not sure, but Momma left him a clue: a flyer for Herman E. Calloway's band! Convinced that Herman E. Calloway must be his father, Bud sets off to find him.

Bud goes to the library, stands in line for food at a homeless shelter, travelsthrough a cardboard jungle town, and is kissed by the dimpled Deza Malone. When Bud does finally find the famous Herman E. Calloway, he's shocked to find a bitter old man who is sure that he isn't Bud's father! "
