| Plot Summary of Hangover Square: a Novel of Darkest Earl's Court |
"Set in the late 1930s shortly before the outbreak of World War II, this novel is set in the Earl's Court area of central London. The central character, George Bone, is a lonely bachelor and schizophrenic who moves in the gaslit world of sleazy bars, down-at-heel hotels and tea houses. His friendships are overshadowed by his passion for the beautiful but fickle whore Netta Longdon, who treats him alternately with affection and disdain, and carries on behind his back with his best friends.
He has frequent ‘dead' moods, during which his personality changes and he decides that he can only be happy again if he kills her. When he returns to normal, he forgets about any such intention, until the mood comes back again. But he realises that to destroy her would destroy him too. "
John Van der Kiste, Resident Scholar
