| Plot Summary of Hearts Over Fences |
"Bethany Webb is building the biggest, fanciest equestrian center in the nation, right in the heart of horse country--Lexington, Kentucky. On grand opening day, she meets handsome Brett Hall, a talented equestrian athlete with only one goal--take the national jumping crown away from the current champion. Later in the day, Beth takes a nasty spill and ends up in a wheelchair. When the surgeons give her the go-ahead for physical therapy, she travels to Louisville to the country's best practitioner for horse-related injuries. She finds herself face-to-face with Brett Hall. He's disgusted about the situation because he has thought about her constantly since the event, and now it's hands-off.
Beth's best friend, James, tries to warn her away from the handsome rogue, but Beth is falling in love with him and isn't sure some of her feelings aren't because of her vulnerability and dependence. While she's gaining strength in her legs, she's trying to manage the second phase of the building project. The board is unsure she's capable of handling the details in her current condition; in particular, James's brother wants her out. A series of calamities befall the construction, and Beth feels she is losing control, all the while trying to deal with her feelings for Brett and his distant manner.
Brett comes to his senses and realizes that if he's to have Beth in his life, he has to set his quest for the jumping crown aside, and pursue his dreams of opening a therapeutic riding center. Meanwhile Beth has stumbled upon a documentary about just such a program, and feels she could walk and ride again with such help. "
