Plot Summary of The Heroic Slave
"Madison Washington was a slave, a runaway slave, that is. He had tried to runaway but his master had caught him and given him forty lashes. As he is in a deep mood of sorrow, he talks to himself in the woods and makes a moving and touching speech. A nearby white man, who is going up to Ohio, hears him, and from then on, vows to be an abolitionist.

Five years later, the man, Mr. Listwell, and his wife were sitting in their living room at the dead of night when a knock came on their door. They opened the door to find the fugitive slave. Mr. Listwell cries out, saying that he would do everything he could to help free the slave. The slave never saw Mr. Listwell before and is alarmed but soon his doubts are gone as Mr. Listwell tells him his story. After resting for a couple of days, Madison goes onto the North, to Canada, so that he could find his freedom. Will he find his freedom? Or will he be caught?
