Plot Summary of Runaway Alice (A Nickel for Alice)
"Alice is twelve year old girl, and if you simply glanced at her you may not look twice. Alice's life is not dull, though. She is growing up as an orphan, her mother dieing when she was little and her father died recently and tragically while coming to bring her to her new home where he had remarried.

Alice is a good girl, a smart girl, so why does she have such a hard time being placed in foster care? Alice keeps running away to a run down boarding house where she lived when she was younger. A stupid thing to do, really, she didn't like it there and her foster families were always nice enough, but no where seemed like home to Alice.

One day Alice's social worker, Miss Cannon, places alice with the Potters. The Potters accept Alice into their home with open arms, but it is clear that they really did want a boy. The Potters live on a farm that Alice falls in love with.

While Alice spends the summer at the farm she finds herself growing more and more attached to the Potters, calling them 'Mother' and 'Dad,' and they grow equally fond of her. Near the end of summer Miss Cannon comes with the news that she had found another home for Alice, and was close to finding a boy for the Potters. Will Alice somehow be able to stay with the Potters? No matter how you put it, Alice isn't the boy they had wanted."
