| Plot Summary of The Animal Factory |
"Ron Decker is a handsome, intelligent young man sentenced to a two-year stretch in San Quentin for drug possesion and distribution. His clean cut looks attract the attention of sexual predators; he's revulsed at the depravity inside the walls of the prison; he's ill-equipped to deal with the bubbling racial hatred and the violence that can come from any direction.
Enter Earl Copen, a hardened prison veteran who's learned to thrive behind bars. A chance meeting with Ron Decker finds him impressed with the young man's keen mind. He teaches Ron the secrets to surviving in prison, and the bond they form surprises them both; their shared love for literature, art and philosophy allows them to escape the confines of the prison yard in their long talks.
But when a random confrontation with a perverted inmate puts Ron Decker's chance for parole in danger--and by extension Earl's own plans for the outside--they must take a risk that could have serious consequences for both of them."
