Plot Summary of To the Outskirts of Habitable Creation
"This book is an account of the actual armed invasion of Canada by American citizens. In December of 1837, immigrant farmers, laborers and tradesmen, alienated from the British colonial government of Upper Canada (Ontario), revolted in Toronto. Following their defeat, many rebels fled to the United States where, with support from sympathetic Americans, they organized themselves and continued raids across the border during 1838 in what is sometimes called the Patriot War.

All such invasions failed and over 200 were taken into custody. Trial proceedings resulted in executions, acquittals, or pardons but ninty-two others, mostly US citizens sentenced to death, were transported to the remote island penal colony at Tasmania.

Life was extremely difficult and cruel; many prisoners died. After 4 long years most of the men were pardoned. Some chose to stay in Tasmania to raise a family; many were able to find their own way back to their Great Lakes home via a long difficult journey on merchent and whaling vessels.
