"Amber, is 28, single and works for a Boston advertising firm. Through the internet, she looks up the one boy from high school who she can never forget, Gray. Unfortunately, he is not what she is looking for as husband material but through e-mail and instant messaging, they renew their acquaintance. Julie is 45 and hired as Amber's assistant. It is her first job since divorcing her husband of 23 years. Like Amber, Julie uses the internet to look up a former baseball player that she had a summer fling when she was 22. He responds to her e-mail. Stephanie is Amber's former boss who has given up her high powered career, moved to Florida and is at home looking after her young children and supporting her husband's executive career. She keeps in close touch with Amber and is particularly interested in learning that Tom has returned to Amber's firm. Stephanie had a serious flirtation with Tom when they were working together. Tom gets Stephanie's e-mail from Amber and starts the flirtation again even though they are both married.
The story of each of the women is told through e-mail and instant messaging as they write to each other and the respective men in their lives. Gray romances Amber with poetic messages and lyrics for songs he is writing about her. Amber starts to fall in love with him again, although, he swears he is never returning to Boston. Moreover, he lives with another woman and is committed to helping raise her son. Julie is charmed by her former boyfriend, but her 19 year old son gets angry when she tells him about her renewed friendship. Stephanie is going through a rocky period in her marriage and accepts Tom's offer of a consulting job. But when Tom tells her that he loves her, she has to ask herself if the e-mails and instant messaging between her and Tom is a form of cheating on her husband.
Amber, Julie and Stephanie each have to ask themselves what they want out of the online relationship with their men. Then Amber discovers she has cancer and the three women change their focus to asking what they want out of life. Discovering what is important in life, causes them to revise their views about the men in their life."
