Plot Summary of A Certain Magic
"Alice Penhallow, a widow in her early 30s, quietly lives in Bath, until her brother asks her to come to London to look after his younger children while he and his wife focus on the coming-out of their eldest daughter. In London, Alice meets her childhood friend, Piers Westhaven. Alice's late husband, Webster, and Piers were best friends. When Piers was 20, he was in love with Alice and wanted to marry her, but Web asked her first and she accepted. For over 15 years, Piers has never told Alice he loved her.

The death of Piers' first wife Harriet in childbirth has left him feeling guilty because he never truly loved her. But to please to please his mother and because he needs an heir, Piers is in London looking for a bride. He soon finds himself surrounded by female interest. As he always used to do, Piers turns to Alice for advice. As Alice spends time with Piers, she regrets that her own love for Piers, which she has tried to ignore all these years, has now resurfaced. One evening, the two friends cannot resist each other and they make love.

Just when Alice and Piers finally think they can confess their love for each other, Piers finds himself manipulated into offering marriage to Cassandra Borden. Alice is sad to see Piers about to marry a woman he does not love but understands that he must be an honourable gentleman. She plans to slip quietly away before Piers' wedding even though she suspects that their night of lovemaking may have resulted in consequences.
