Plot Summary of A Chance Encounter
"Elizabeth Rossiter had been in love once with Robert Denning, who married her, made love to her, then abandoned her. His powerful family informed her that the marriage had been annuled but Elizabeth's reputation was in ruins. Her position as a companion to the daughter of a wealthy family has let her live a quiet and obscure life until Robert, who has now become the Marquess of Hetherington, moves into the neighborhood.

Robert cannot believe it when he sees Elizabeth after all these years. He is pleased to see that she seems terrified of him. And rightly so since he is still angry that she made him believe she loved him, then ran away. But Robert needs to talk to Elizabeth about the problem of their still being married."
