Plot Summary of East of Midnight
"Dekteon is a runaway slave who is captured by a magician named Zaister from another world. Zaister casts a spell to switch bodies and then deposits Dekteon in his own world. Here, Dekteon is initially pleased, because he is recognized as a king and given a life of luxury; but he soon learns why Zaister was so anxious to escape. Dekteon is now a king in a matriarchal society where the king is sacrificed every five years and replaced.

Meanwhile, Zaister is in Dekteon's original world, where he tries to escape from the slave masters. Unfortunately he soon discovers that due to the exhange of bodies with Dekteon, his own mental and magical powers have diminished, and his capture by the slavers is inevitable. Both Zaister and Dekteon now face mortal danger, unless one of them can successfully outwit their tormentors and find a way to put things right."
