| Plot Summary of For Love And Country: The Italian Resistance |
"For Love And Country describes the motivation and role of those who fought in the resistance movement in Italy during World War II. Emphasis is placed on the resistance in Rome and the Lazio region of Italy. The author moves from a broad canvas including the larger political actors, Italy, Germany, the United States and Great Britain to the specific events from the German occupation of Rome in September of 1943 to the liberation of Rome in 1945.
Gallo also describes the specific actions that the partisans took in Rome to liberate the city and their country. He uses a series of in-depth interviews with 10 men and women who took part in the events to descbribe their motivation and activities risking their lives to liberate their country. These partisans took part in one of the most audacious actions in all of Europe during the war when they attacked a German SS unit in the cener of Rome. This was the famous Via Rasella attack which led to the German reprisals known as the Ardeatine massacre of 335 men. The author provides fresh new material and interpreations of this time in the history of Italy and World War II.
Gallo uncovers the truth behind the whereabouts of Field Marshall Kesselring and dispels previous myths that placed him in Rome duing the Via Rasella attack and explains his role in the exeuction of 15 American soldiers in Liguria. Kesselring took part in a great coverup fearing that if his role be known he would surely face a execution at wars end. "
