Plot Summary of Neurotica
"Anna Shapiro is getting fed up with the lack of satisfying sex between her and her husband, Dan. Dan's hypochondria makes him fear that sex might cause a heart attack. Anna's best friend warns Dan this might cause Anna to look elsewhere, but Dan is currently too obsessed with the worry that he has testicular cancer.

Anna writes for a tabloid newspaper. She is working on a piece about a best selling feminist author who decries the beauty culture and claims that married women can have affairs which will benefit them as long as they learn to keep emotionally uninvolved. Anna decides to test the theory herself and begins when she meets a handsome pilot at the funeral of a family friend. She then tries an agency for married people looking for a discreet affair and meets a handsome doctor. Not only do they have great sex but Anna learns that the doctor performed plastic surgery on the feminist author that Anna is writing about. Meanwhile, Dan decides to try some psychotherapy to try to overcome his obsession with his health but is too embaressed to tell anyone what he is doing.

Anna decides her test requires at least three adulterous affairs. She is sent on an assignment with the newspaper's photographer, Ed. After car trouble, discussions of their personal lives and eventually covering a male strip tease show, Anna has sex with Ed. But this time, she is afraid she might be in love with Ed.

Dan discovers Anna's adultery and Anna is left facing losing Dan, who she loves, losing Ed as a lover and even losing her children over a divorce. She realizes that the advice in the book she is writing about is a fraud."
