| Plot Summary of The English Witch |
"Basil Trevelyan cannot resist schemes and intrigue. However, his plot to marry the woman his cousin wanted landed him into trouble and ended with his banishment to India. In India, however, he made his fortune and after three years is ready to return to England. But before he does, his formidable Aunt Clem has commanded that he make a detour to rescue her goddaughter, Alexandra Ashmore, who is in Albania under threat of an unwanted marriage arranged by her impractical archaelogist father.
Alexandra is called the English witch because she seems to put a spell on men everywhere. They all seem to desire her, except Randolph, the man her father wants her to marry. Nothing is wrong with Randolph but Alexandra wants her freedom. She is rescued from Albania and marriage to Randolph by Basil, who she finds attractive but immediately realizes is an untrustworthy charmer.
Back in London, Aunt Clem is determined to provide Alexandra with the pleasures she has missed in her life with her father and also introduces her to William, heir to a ducal title, who is looking for a wife. Meanwhile, Alexandra's father is following her to London with Randolph in tow. Basil is outraged that his aunt is trying to pair up Alexandra with a man who is at least as notorious a rake as himself. Basil must plot to get rid of all of Alexandra's suitors because he wants her for himself."
