| Plot Summary of The Double Wager |
"The Duke of Eversleigh, who is a confirmed bachelor with a desirable mistress, bets his friends he will get married soon. He has an odious cousin as his heir and wants to cut him out of his will. Henrietta Tallant, a boyish and unconventional young woman known to her friends as Henry, wagers she can get a marriage proposal from the confirmed bachelor, the Duke of Eversleigh.
After one meeting at a ball where Henry amuses Eversleigh, he proposes. Neither knows there has been a double wager.
After their marriage, things do not run smoothly. Henry does not understand why she feels so strange when Everleigh kisses her and panics when he tries to get into her bed. Meanwhile, Everleigh's former mistress and his cousin are plotting to get Henry into a compromising situation so that Everleigh will divorce her and things can get back to the way they used to be."
