Plot Summary of Playing by the Baby Rules
"Marisa, a Michigan lingerie store owner, is becoming desperate to get pregnant. She will soon need a hysterectomy, so it's now or never. She can't afford a sperm bank, so decides to ask her best friend, musician Jake, to be the father. Together, they decide on rules to follow while they try to get pregnant, in order to preserve their friendship.

As their relationship grows, rules keep getting broken. Both Marisa and Jake begin to think of a future together as a family. However, Marisa is haunted by her mother's bad reputation, and her strained relationship with her father, who was never there for her when she was a child. Jake, in turn, belives he comes from a bad family: his father was an abusive alcholic, and Jake fears that he will become one, too."
