| Plot Summary of The Last Guardian of Everness |
"
Tor, Sep 2004, 25.95, 336 pp.
ISBN: 0312848714
For the past millennium the Waylocks pass down from generation to generation the arduous task of guarding the dream-gate that contains malevolent beings waiting for a lapse by a watchman so they can flood into the earth to cause death and chaos. People ridicule the vigil of the Waylocks insisting that the dark forces are the realm of myths, and fantasy.
Currently, guard Galen Waylock observes the stirring of evil beings beyond the gate as if they readying to send the dark to swamp the light. Galen knows the "Powers of Light" will defend humanity, but the Powers of Light forces are antagonistic to liberty and the pursuits of happiness. If he awakens the Light and they win, mankind will survive but live under the thumb of a kind despot who will do what he thinks is best for all regardless of individual rights. If he fails to wake up the Light, the Dark will probably eradicate humanity. Unsure, Galen decides to let the Light sleep, but steal their fairy-weapons to use against the Dark.
