| Plot Summary of The Summer of Riley |
"Danny runs home after his last day of school. It's the beginning of summer! He can't wait to get home and finish digging the pond in their backyard with his grandpa. He stops short as he remembers that his grandfather is dead.
Danny's mother sees him depressed during his first week of summer and she is worried that he will be lonely without his grandfather. So she takes him to the dog pound and lets him have a large, white dog named Riley. Riley seems to be very friendly and things go on well at Danny's house. He begins to dig more of the pond with his dog.
But trouble comes along when Danny tries to introduce Riley to his neighbor. Riley sees the neighbor's old horse, Sultan. He is overjoyed to find a "friend" and chases Sultan around the yard thinking that he could play with the old and feeble horse. The horse becomes overcomed with a shock and almost dies. The neighbor responds by calling 911 and it looks like Riley could be killed for chasing livestock.
It's up to Danny and his best friend Grace to save Riley before he gets killed from a misunderstanding."
