Plot Summary of A Scandalous Lady
"Creena Hartford and her daughters, Laurel and Erica, are left nearly destitute upon the death of Mr. Hartford. He had another wife they knew nothing about and his marriage to Creena was not legal and the girls are illegitimate.

In his will, he left Erica his estate, Hartford Park, and the ladies decide to fight for it, even though they have the law and the executor of the estate, Lord Brontson, against them. Arriving there, they discover that the haughty, rich Lord Bronston has seen fit to give the estate to his uncle, Lord Rupert.

Rupert is quite amiable, and being completely charmed by Creena, offers the ladies residence at the estate's dower house (no strings attached), and offers to bring Laurel and Erica out in London society. Once in London, the ladies are quick to conquer the ton with Laurel's beauty and Erica's artistic talents and outrageous mode of dressing.

However, Lord Brontson is determined to show them what he considers to be their rightful place (somewhere provincial and not in polite society), and there ensues a battle of wits between him and Erica. When Brontson finally realizes he's in love and proposes to Erica, he is astonished to be rejected, and becomes determined to win her heart, even if he has to change himself and chase her around half of Europe to do so."
