Plot Summary of In The Footsteps of Lewis and Clark
"The journey of Lewis and Clark along with the Corp of Discovery is one of the great tales of exploration on this or any continent. It's necessity came about as a result of President Thomas Jefferson's 1803 Louisiana Purchase of 830,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River and his desire for a line of communication to the Pacific Ocean. Traveling west from St. Louis, MO in May of 1804 to the Pacific coast at Fort Clatson, OR the expedition led by Lewis and Clark took more than 27 months to complete the journey. Mr. Snyder gives a thorough account of the men who went, the dangers they faced, the Indians both friendly and hostile encountered, the incredible abundance of nature they documented, and the legacy they left behind.

The historical account is full of characters: Meriwether Lewis, Capt. William Clark, Sacagawea, Sgt. Nathaniel Pryor, Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon, James Monroe, Russian Empress Catherine the Great, Pvt. Richard Windsor, James Madison, Sgt. John Ordway among others. The expedition would forever be known for its two commanders Lewis and Clark but 29 brave men completed the 8,000 mile round trip from Missouri to Oregon and back. The information gathered and the proof of an overland passage to the Pacific helped to open up the entire continent for rapid expansion and settlement to the new nation."
