| Plot Summary of The Errant Earl |
"Just days after the battle of Waterloo, Stephen has returned to England after 6 years away, fighting in the Napoleonic wars, in order to claim the earldom of his late brother, and to try to make amends to his wife, Laura, whom he left the day after their disastrous wedding night. They had been manipulated into marrying and he had found out only after the ceremony, got drunk and poured the blame on his wife who was deeply hurt.
There has been no communication between him and the family since that fateful day, and he knows he will have to use all his powers of persuasion to convince his wife that he wants to make the best of the marriage. Coming home, he discovers to his amazement that he has a son by her. He also discovers to his dismay that his family had tried to write to him but the letters had been lost, leading to the contents of his letters to them being misunderstood. His wife is naturally very suspicious and angry with him, but little by little, he is able to convince her that he means to make the marriage work, even if they can never love each other. Just as everything seems to be headed towards a happy ending, their son is kidnapped, and it's up to Stephen to save him."
