| Plot Summary of The Monk |
" Ambrosio, the title character of Lewis' The Monk, begins as a renowned clergyman. He discovers that one of the novice monks is really a beautiful woman, Matilda, and she seduces him in the monastary. Ambrosio goes from bad to worse, even enlisting Matilda's help in the rape of a young virgin who has attracted his attentions. Fearful of discovery, he even commits murder.
In a secondary plot a young lover named Raymond plans to elope with his beloved, Agnes, but on the night of elopement, he runs off with a female ghost, the bleeding nun, instead.
