Plot Summary of The Custom of the Country
"Undine Sprague is the central character in Edith Wharton's "The Custom of the Counrty." She is newly arrived in New York. Her family has come into money through business in the Midwest and now she seeks to use that money to buy social position in fashionable Eastern society. She accomplishes this though marriage to a young man with social connections but not much money, then after some time and a visit to Europe, she realizes that there are still more fashionable people. Despite now having a child she divorces her husband for marriage to a title. Unfortunately she finds this less than she bargained for. For Undine the grass is always greener. Wharton creates a story of a beautiful young woman who always wants something better than she has and who uses her charms to get what she wants."
