| Plot Summary of Mother of Pearl |
"In 1950 Petal, Mississippi, a number of lives are intertwined together through the presence of Joody Two Sun, a mysterious woman who seems to be able to uncover people's innermost secrets. Valuable Korner, the fifteen-year-old daughter of the town prostitute, is awed by Joody, and turns to the older woman when she finds that the process of womanhood is too complex for her to understand on her own. Even Grade, an African-American man who never knew his parents, is passionately in love with Joody, but cannot easily incorporate Joody's eccentric nature into his simple and ordered life. Even's neighbor, the misogynist Canaan, unexpectedly finds true love and finds his life forever intertwined with Even and Joody's. Joleb Green, a troubled young white boy, finds himself rejected and ultimately rescued by Joody. A flood, a death, and an unexpected accident force Even, Joody, Canaan, Joleb, and Valuable to re-evaluate their lives and to call upon personal resources none of them realized they had.
