Plot Summary of Emily Climbs
"In the second book of L.M. Montgomery's Emily trilogy, Emily Starr finds herself wishing to attend high school, not always a widely accepted practice for a young girl living in Prince Edward Island, Canada, in the early part of the twentieth century. Emily comes from a proud family, the Murrays, who are not the most likely to permit young women follow their dreams. Emily wishes to become a writer, however, and attending school with her friends offers her many opportunities. In order to attend school, however, Emily must leave New Moon farm, a place she has come to love, and live with the bitter and unkind Aunt Ruth. Emily is convinced that Aunt Ruth will never like her, and she worries about her own ambitions to become a writer. Emily and her friends Ilse, Teddy, and Perry have many adventures as they grow up together."
A. Antonow, Resident Scholar

"In Emily Climbs, Emily Byrd Starr moves out of her cherished childhood home to continue her education at Shrewsbury High School, while living with her strict and unsympathetic Aunt Ruth. While at Shrewsbury, the reader accompanies Emily through not only a period of humorous and insightful adolescent growth but also gives an honest, endearing portrait of the development of a true writer."
Sunshine Kirst, Resident Scholar
