| Plot Summary of The Chosen |
"Danny Saunders is the brilliant son of an ultra orthodox Chasidic Rabbi. He is being trained to take over for his father. He becomes friends with Reuven Malter, the son of an Orthodox Jew, but from a more liberal tradition. As the boys become friendlier Danny reveals that he is interested in learning about the larger world, that he is not content with remaining in the Chasidic community. He is faced with the prospect of telling his father that he doesn't want to be a Rabbi, but wants instead to work in the secular world and go to college to study psychology."

"During a brutal baseball game, Reuven Malters encounters Danny Saunders, a brillant Jewish scholar. After an accident during the game, Reuven and Danny start to explore a growing friendship between them. Each of their lifestyles are different since Reuven is a conservative Jewish boy and Danny is a Hasidic Jew. Reuven is facinated by Danny's life and Danny longs for Reuven's freedom. The boy's relationship evolves over time, which carries them through difficult situations with each family.
This story is set in the years right after World War II, during which the Jewish people are struggling to set up a Jewish homeland in Isreal. The historical facts are facinating and the story incorporates them well."
