| Plot Summary of The Gilded Lion |
"Celinaire's scheming guardian seeks to force her to marry the vile Phineas Smoot. Taking her fate into her own hands she marries Leopold Wilde, a cripple who has advertized for a wife in the newspaper. But Leopold Wilde is really an alias for Kristoffe Wilde, who has been forced to assume the character of "Phineas Smoot" to protect himself from the French after he finished his spying career in the Napoleonic wars.
Falling in love with his wife and straining at being forced to live as a paraplegic, he resurrects Kristoffe to escort Leopold's wife in search of her shipwrecked uncle in Cornwall. Celinaire struggles to stay loyal to her husband while being attracted to her dashing "cousin". And now that Kristoffe has come out of hiding, the French threaten his life again."
