"A young woman, Helen Hayden, is arrested on charges of kidnapping the baby of a wealthy family.

The circumstances of her case are strange: she has flagged down Carter, a police officer, and turned the child over to him. She claims she does not know why the child was with her. She, in fact, claims to have amnesia and does not know her name, wehre she ilves, or any details about herself.

The chief of police, Captain Day, believes Helen is behind the kidnapping, but Carter continues to defend her. "
