"Clowance Masterson has never really been good at anything, except research. She is a twenty-six year old virgin and thinks that she has no special skills or abilities. She already has two master's degrees, but is unsure what to do with her life so she has decided to go back to school and get her Ph.D. First, however, she has to persuade her adventurous grandfather to come home with her before the rest of her family finds out what he is up to. Clowance made the mistake of reading her grandfather an article about treasure hunting and lost Spanish galleons while he was in the hospital recovering from some rare Amazonian disease contracted on his expedition to the Amazon. As soon as her grandfather, Ezra, was well, he was off to Key West to find himself a partner to search for sunken treasure.
Clowance follows Ezra to Key West, desperate to persuade Ezra to come home and worried for his safety because the man he has taken on as a partner has quite a criminal history. When Clowance first sets eyes on Michael "Shady" O'Grady, she knows that he is much more dangerous than her research led her to believe. Tall, rugged, muscular with tan skin, blonde hair and sparkling blue eyes, Shady cannot figure out what this delicate, brown haired beauty with sensual gray eyes is doing at his dock. When he discovers that his new partner has a family who is not too excited about his new hobby, he is afraid that Ezra will pull the plug on his funding and his dream of the finding the Riaza will be lost again. He has spent 15 years of his life trying to find the Spanish galleon that went down in 1715 and he knows that this time he is going to find it!
Clowance is chagrined to realize that persuading Ezra to leave his new adventure is not going to be as easy as she first hoped. She tries to make the best of it and even pitched in to check the research that Shady has been building up over the years. She is appalled that he has just been randomly going up the Keys of Matecumbe looking for the ship and soon finds that he has been searching in the wrong place for all these years. Shady is amazed that Clowance has found out so much about the Riaza in such a short time and finds that he is growing steadily more attracted to Clowance - she is quite unlike anyone he has ever known. And as Clowance spends more time in the exotic Key West with Shady's stimulating company, she finds herself looking for reasons to stay and falling deeper and deeper in love with Shady...
This was a great, fun, fast, sexy read full of treasure & adventure! I really loved the characters and thought that they seemed like real people who grew and developed throughout the book. It was a delight to watch Clowance gain confidence in herself and in her sensuality and Shady was a great hero, knowing that he wasn't quite good enough for her, yet wanting her too badly to care. Clowance's grandfather, Ezra, was a hoot and he has his own romance in the magic of Key West and the rest of the secondary characters are fun too. The plot was a little predictable, but there are plenty of surprises in there too. There was also quite a bit of information on sunken treasure, Key West and the old Spanish conquistadores, which I found fascinating. This is a great book with a little something for everyone. The perfect beach read!
