| Plot Summary of Sarah |
"The main character of the novel is a twelve-year-old boy whose mother is a truck stop prostitute (a.k.a. lot lizard) named Sarah. Though she is a terrible, abusive, neglectful mother, the boy idolizes her beauty and the skill with which she manipulates men. In an attempt to surpass her in these departments, the boy begins working for a pimp named Glad who specializes in transvestite prostitutes. Glad is a kind pimp, and he won't let his youngest whore overwork himself. The boy, frustrated, journeys to see the Jackalope, an enormous piece of roadkill at a nearby truck stop, which is said to bring luck to all lot lizards who visit it. There, he meets Pooh, a young female prostitute, and her pimp, Le Loup, who mistakes him for a girl and offers to give him a job. From there, the adventures continue, as the boy is mistaken for a saint at his new truck stop. When it is revealed that he is not only a saint, but also a boy, life becomes dangerous for the boy. Luckily for him, Glad and the transvestite prostitutes have worked up a killer scheme to rescue him."
