Plot Summary of Manhattan, When I was Young
"After graduating from Connecticut College in 1953, Mary Cantwell moved to New York City because, after growing up in a rural town, NY was "the place where there'd be lots of people like [her]". She organizes her memories based on which apartment she was living in at the time, and still believes that Grenwich Village is the best neighborhood in the city. During the years that followed her college graduation, she worked at various publishing and magazine companies and tried to balance caring for her children, satisfying her husband, and keeping her sanity, not always successfully."
Aleta Wiley, Resident Scholar
