"Christopher is an autistic fifteen-year old who excels at math, won't eat anything that is brown or yellow, and needs to have the world just-so or he will scream, hit, or moan for hours. Late one night he finds the neighbor's poodle impaled on a pitch fork, and his subsequent search for the poodle's murderer leads him to some clues about a darker secret in his own life.
This is a quick read and very sensitive to Christopher's state of mind. The reader sympathizes as Christopher must learn to work with and work through his abilities and disabilities in order to accomplish the goals he sets for himself. "

He decides to launch an investigation and write a murder mystery about it. Christopher has great trouble coping with other people. He screams if he is touched and doesn't understand facial expressions. He uses math, for which he is very talented, as a coping mechanism.
During his investigation he discovers that his mother isn't dead as he thought but is living in London and has been writing him weekly letters which his father has been hiding. On learning that his father actually killed the dog Christopher is frightened and decides to embark on a terrifying train and underground journey to go and live with his mother in London. This award winning novel captures with humour and empathy the terrible plight of a troubled mind. "

While interviewing neighbors about the event, he discovers that his father has been lying to him about his mother's "death." Christopher becomes obsessed with trying to solve the murder of the dog and tries to make sense of his mother's "death." He cannot understand at first that his mother is not really dead because he is autistic and doesn't have a real grasp on reality and his emotions. Throughout the book Christopher struggles with his own emotions and his reality.
