"Milkman comes of age in Michigan in a Black family alienated from one another. He falls in love with and ultimately betrays his cousin Hagar, who tries to kill him. While trying to find gold that his aunt, Pilate, supposedly stole from under her brother's nose, Milkman discovers the story of his ancestors and the love between them. This quest is complicated by his best friend, Guitar, who believes he stole the gold and is trying to kill him."
