"October Brown and her sister Virgie have lost more than a family when their father kills their mother. Their internal response to this event is handled in two very different ways. The direction they take with their emotions is eloquently portrayed when October gives birth to a son, and decides to give him to Virgie to raise as her own. Using a minor theme of the upcoming jazz influence within the black community in the midwest before and after WW II, Claire takes the reader through the struggle of two sisters trying to make sense of their loss and reaching some kind of comfort in how the child they both love is raised. As more and more details are revealed, the reader is able to piece together a lost child-hood of two girls and their opportunity for forgiveness."
