| Plot Summary of Like Water for Chocolate |
"Tita is the cook for her family. She has a special relationship with the food she cooks, namely that she can, subconsciously, put her emotions into the food she eats. On her 16th birthday, her boyfriend Pedro comes to ask for her hand in marriage. Unfortunately for Pedro and Tita, Tita's mother believes in the family tradition that youngest child (Tita) will stay to take care of her mother until she dies. For consolation, Tita's mother offers her sister, Rosaura, in place of Tita. Pedro accepts, knowing this to be his only way to be near Tita everyday. The saddened Tita has to prepare food for the wedding. She does, but it turns out her misery and longing somehow got in the food. The wedding is a disaster because everyone is either feeling great longing or they're vomiting. As the years go by, Pedro and Tita have a love affair without anyone noticing while other strange, magically occurances, some funny, some serious, occur."
