"In this book, Kinsey Millhone has to play cover-up so she can REALLY find out who this killer is up to and what he is after. She is actually working on the death of a claims adjuster for a California insurance company. She goes from a Los Angeles barrio in pursuit of a violent criminal, into jails and hospitals, and into a grungy bar named the Meat Locker. She finds some surprises there about this killer, and continues on her way following up on him, hoping to capture this monster and put him away for good."

An unusual numbers of claims have been filed and fraud is a definite possibility. She befriends Bibianna, the person whose claim she is investigating and ends up spending the night in jail with her. When their bail is made she assumes it is due to the deal she made with the cops to help their case. However, it is Bibianna's old fiancee' . a gang leader, who takes both of them back to his place at gun point where Kinsey is hoping she can do some more investigating. "
