| Plot Summary of The Riddle of the Reluctant Rake |
"I found this book a delightful, action-packed read.
Alice Prior, a young woman, invites Colonel Hastings into her carriage after a ball. He disappears with her into the night. The young woman's reputation is ruined, and Colonel Hastings wakes up to find out he knows nothing about what actually happened. All he remembers was getting into her carriage. Colonel Hastings is court-martialed because of that incident. His family deserts him, believing he is guilty.
The rest of the story is spent on finding out who framed him and proving his innocence. Cecily Hall is Alice Prior's relation, and she hunts Colonel Hastings down, trying to find Alice, playing the detective. She develops feelings for him in the process, as she realizes his innocence, and he also does for her.
The ending's climax is very good. The depths that Colonel Hastings goes through to rescue Cecily Hall from death is unbelievably romantic. "
