| Plot Summary of Gravesend Light |
"An anthropologist, Joe Madden, returns to his family's summer home to study the quaint village life. He signs on as a fisherman and plays an ambiguous role in local politics and friendships. Joe's love affair with a feminist doctor has unforeseen complications. Lots of issues are undecided when he sails off into a storm that threatens to be his last. Now the book is a real pageturner, although the well-developed characters and powerful evocation of place will have the reader hooked from early on. "
