| Plot Summary of My Dearest Enemy |
"MY DEAREST ENEMY begins with a death. The reading of the will reveals that this "uncle" left a house to 2 people. Lillian Bede (his wife's niece) has 5 years to make the manor house profitable. If she can fulfill this (as well as other tasks) she will be the sole owner of the manor. Otherwise, it will revert to Avery Thorne (dead man's newphew) who has been promised the house as a child.
For 5 years, Avery goes off adventuring around the world, making his living by writing about his experiences. Lillian struggles to keep the house afloat. During this time, they exchange letters, insults, and Avery's foreign gifts. After the alloted time, Avery comes home. When they finally meet, they are instantly attracted to each other although they continue in their rivalry.
Beside the house, their own histories come between the pair. Lily is a suffragist, determined not to marry because law favors the husband in marriage (her mother was a victim). Avery is determined to own the house because it represents home and family (including marriage). However, in the end, it is revealed (through meddling by famiy and friends, a touching letter, and disasters on the house) that they fell in love even before they met. Luckily, they are able to overcome their obstacles and they both get the house."
