| Plot Summary of Stay Me, Oh Comfort Me |
"This book consists of journals, stories, and a few letters of Fisher's dating from 1933-41, when she was 25-33. The effects of the Depression are felt, stress and rancor grow in her own family, she tries being a faculty wife (unsuccessfully), for a short time she and husband Al try to live together with newly divorced friend and future husband Dillwyn Parrish on the farm in Switzerland, she divorces Al Fisher and marries Dillwyn, and cares for him a few brief years as he loses limbs to old war wounds and eventually commits suicide. The tone is obviously somber; Fisher writes a lot about writing difficulties, even with her journal, and discussions with "Tim" (as Parrish is known) about death. The title story is a poignant portrait of an alcoholic, increasingly deteriorating lesbian friend in Paris. But there is still room for celebrations of landscapes, pet animals, interesting friends, and wonderful meals."
David Loftus, Resident Scholar
