| Plot Summary of A.D. 62: Pompeii |
"This unusual novel is written by an expert in archaeology, someone who teaches archaeology and has worked on "digs." Rebecca East (author's pen name) wrote this, her first novel, to relate a very interesting fictionalized account of what life must have been like in ancient Pompeii. Her expertise on Roman history and Pompeii comes out clearly in her novel. She is also a very good story teller. Her main Character, Miranda, is sent back into time by a team of researchers testing out a new time travel machine. Miranda already can speak Latin and has no trouble conversing with the people she meets.
She becomes a slave in a rich household close to Pompeii. She makes friends and, unfortunately, an enemy. She escapes and spends a day exploring Pompeii while Pompeii was still standing. She goes back to her owner's house and makes more friends, falls in love, and experiences some really exciting adventures. The novel is superb in its own right, but add to it a gifted writer, savy about Roman history and the ruins of Pompeii, and you have a novel you will not want to put down.
