Writer Jaine Austen has spent years writing resumes and brochures waiting for her big break and she finally thinks she has it when she is asked to be a ghost writer for the new television show “Muffy and Me”. It is a teen-age sitcom about a girl who gets knocked out by a volleyball and acquires magical powers. Jaine's friend Kandi, formerly an animation writer for the hit cartoon Beanie and the Cockroach had accepted a job as staff writer for Muffy and Me and brought her friend on board.
Jaine thinks that if the show is a success, they will keep her on staff permanently. The job isn't easy because an actor Quinn sleeps with the head writer, the star, and Kandi. When Quinn is poisoned all the evidence points to Kandi. Jaine takes it upon herself to figure out who did it because she is absolutely, positively sure her friend is innocent.
LAST WRITES is a very funny amateur sleuth mystery written by an author who knows how to write comedy without down playing the serious subject matter. Told in the first person narrative, readers are able to see the suspects' personalities through the eyes of the protagonist. Laura Levine has created a heroine and a support cast that will remind readers of family members so there is a strong rapport between the cast and the audience. There are some scenes that are so humorous that readers will laugh until they cry.
