Plot Summary of Final Blackout
"This was one of Hubbard's earlier works, published in 1940 near the outbreak of the Second World War. It is set in a Europe devastated by thirty years of incessant warfare. Governments all over the Continent have been topped time and again by revolution, and sheer exhaustion has brought the great industrial machines of civilization to a grinding halt. Europe is a veritable graveyard, ruled by scattered peasants and roving bands. A small band of "unkillables," one hundred and sixty-eight survivors from a regiment of six thousand, make their way through the war-torn remains of Europe, led by the mysterious, legendary man who is simply known as the Lieutenant. They fight off enemies and rivals from all sides and trek through deserted cities and ancient fortresses. They ultimately return home to England, where they seize control of the impotent government which has allowed so many like them to ruin their lives in the wasteland of Europe. They establish a vigorous and just new regime, determined to establish an island of peace and sanity in a world gone mad. However, when a new enemy arrives from across the Atlantic, they find that their last chance at civilization may be all for naught..."
